About 130 Senior Citizens attend the Annual Party which is held at the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel.
Present Committee: Teresa McEvoy and Sharon Ryan
A Little History: Raheen Parish Senior Citizen Party was introduced in the year 2000. It had been many years since the previous parties had been held, and many thought it was about time something was done. In the early years the Annual party was held in the James Fintan Lalor Memorial Hall, Raheen, and food was provided by the I.C.A Groups within the parish. Music was often provided by the trio of Pat Keenan, Raheen (Accordian), Mrtin, Bergin, Cromogue (Fiddle), and Jimmy Phelan, Roskelton (Fiddle). There were many who would sing a solo song and others a recitation.
When the party was reintroduced it was decided that a change of venue would suit more modern times and the venue of Eamon A’ Chnoic in Raheen was agreed. Over 80 parishioners attended the party and it was evident that the annual get together was something of great importance to the community. On this occasion dinner was provided by Eddie and Maurs Phelan, Restaurant, Mountrath. Desert and tea was organised by the parish I.C.A. Groups. Music was supplied by Malcom Smyth, Clonkeen, and Frank McGovern from Shanahoe attended from the Order of Malta. The following year was similar in every way except that the number of attendees from the parish had increased.
In 2002 it was agreed to move the Raheen Senior Citizens Party to the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel, and in March of that year the number attending had reached 100. The Parish Irish Red Cross Group and the Parish Order of Malta send representatives who look after every need on the day.
The bands that have entertained over the years were ‘Whispers’ Noel and Sadie Sheridan, ‘Ruben James’ Jimmy Brophy. We have been entertained on many occasions by three generations of the Bergin Family, Cromogue, Veronica Ryan, Shanahoe, Har Walsh Clonad, Geraldine Grant Colt, Fr. James Kelly and Fr. Tommy Dillon, just to mention a few. Raheen Senior Citizens Party has gone from strength to strength in numbers and to date 130 – 140 parishioners enjoy the day out.
